— AI, now also called SI, for small business
AI that does real work in a small business.
Artificial intelligence, which the US government now calls Super Intelligence (SI), is only worth it when it does real work. Not a strategy deck and not a chatbot bolted to your homepage: we find the hours your team loses to phones, inboxes, retyping, and searching for answers, then build AI that takes those hours back, with a person in charge of anything that matters. Then we keep it running.
Four things we build and run.
Each one starts small, gets measured, and only grows when the numbers say it should.
- AI receptionist A voice and chat agent on your own number and site that answers, books, takes orders, and hands the hard calls to a person. Today The phone rings out at 7:40pm and the caller books with the next business on the list. After The call is answered, the appointment lands in your calendar, and you read a two-line summary in the morning.
- Workflow automation Inbox triage, quote and invoice drafting, data entry, and CRM upkeep, with a person approving anything that leaves the building. Today Someone spends Monday morning copying enquiries into a spreadsheet and retyping receipts. After Enquiries arrive sorted with a drafted reply, and receipts are already in the books waiting for a yes.
- Copilot, ChatGPT & Claude rollout The right assistant for your team, set up on business plans with sane data controls, a written use policy, and training built around real jobs. Today Half the team pastes client files into whichever free chatbot they found, and nobody knows which. After Everyone uses one approved tool on a business plan, knows what not to paste, and has five workflows that save them time.
- Private AI on your documents An assistant that answers from your own policies, manuals, and past work, cites the page it used, and stays inside your account. Today New staff ask the same twenty questions, and the answers live in one senior person’s head. After They ask the assistant, get the answer with a link to the source page, and the senior person gets their afternoons back.

Where we will tell you not to use it.
Saying no is part of the job. These are the places we push back, even when a vendor says otherwise.
- Anything that moves money without a person approving it.
- Professional judgment: legal, medical, financial, or safety advice to a customer.
- Tasks that happen a few times a month, where a checklist is cheaper and more reliable.
- Fixed-rule work that plain automation does better, faster, and for less.
- Replacing the human contact your customers chose you for.
How it starts.
-
Tell us where the hours go
A few sentences: the team, the tools, and the work that eats the week. No call to book.
-
Get a written answer
Within one business day: which service fits, what we would build first, and a fixed price. If AI is the wrong answer, we say so.
-
Build one thing, measure it
One workflow, one assistant, or one team first. A month of real numbers before anything grows.
-
Keep it running
Models, prices, and your business all change. We maintain what we build under ongoing care, or hand it to your team with documentation.
Not sure where to start? The AI-readiness sprint is a short, fixed-price review that ends with a written plan. About the sprint
AI only works on a solid base.
An assistant is only as safe as the permissions it reads, and an automation only as reliable as the systems it connects. That is why we also run the rest: the Microsoft 365 or Google tenant, the security, the website, and the cloud underneath. One team, so nothing falls between vendors.
What we promise about your data.
- Business-grade AI providers only, on terms that exclude your data from model training.
- Your documents, transcripts, and logs live in accounts you own, and you can delete them.
- Canadian hosting for stored data wherever the service allows it, and a plain note on what is processed elsewhere.
- A person approves anything that reaches a customer or moves money, until you decide otherwise.
- Everything we build is logged, so you can see what it did and why.
You can try our own first.
Ask SetKernel answers questions from our published writing and cites its sources: the same private-AI pattern we build for clients. Our MCP server lets AI agents use our tools directly, and our retrieval templates are open source.
— Questions
What owners ask first.
Is my business too small for AI?
Usually not, but it depends on volume. If one person spends five hours a week on something repetitive, that is worth looking at. If a task happens twice a month, it probably is not. We will tell you which side of the line you are on.
What does AI cost a small business?
Two parts: a fixed-price build, and a monthly running cost for model usage, hosting, or licences. The running cost scales with use, so we estimate it from your real volumes. Every quote shows both, in writing, before anything starts.
Will AI replace my staff?
That is not what we build. The aim is to take the repetitive parts of people’s jobs away so they spend time on customers and judgment. In practice, small businesses use the time to answer more enquiries, not to cut people.
Is it safe to use AI with client information?
On business-grade plans with the right settings, it can be. On free or personal accounts, often not. Most of the risk in small businesses today comes from staff using personal chatbot accounts, which is why a proper rollout and a one-page policy come first.
Do you work outside Halifax?
Yes. We are based in Halifax and work remotely with businesses across Canada and the United States. Training can be in person in Halifax or live over video anywhere.
Is SI (Super Intelligence) different from AI?
Not in the sense most people now mean it. Since September 29, 2026 the US federal government calls artificial intelligence Super Intelligence, or SI, with the same legal meaning. Everything on this page is AI, or SI. Superintelligence in the research sense, a system smarter than people at almost everything, is a different idea and does not exist yet. Our explainer covers the difference.
What if we already have an IT provider?
That is fine. We can build the AI piece and work alongside your current provider, or take over the whole stack if you want one team. Either way, we agree in writing who owns what.
